The Marine Institute, in collaboration with the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART), is thrilled to announce 25 bursaries for dedicated FEAS surveys and five bursaries for INFOMAR seabed mapping surveys in 2024 aboard the renowned Celtic Explorer and Tom Crean vessels. These opportunities are tailor-made for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students in marine sciences, offering hands-on experience and the chance to expand your professional network.

- Bursary Stipends: Receive a fixed stipend of €95 per survey night.
- Continuous Professional Development (CPD): Gain valuable CPD through a specialized module, AGFF09003 Marine Research Vessel Data Collection and Surveying, accredited at level 9 NFQ for 10 ECTs.

Bursary Surveys in 2024
Operated by Fishery Ecosystem Advisory Services (FEAS) and Advanced Mapping Services at the Marine Institute, the surveys include:
• Irish Anglerfish and Megrim Survey (IAMS) – 3 legs (February to April)
• Nephrops Underwater TV Surveys – 3 legs (May to August)
• Western European Shelf Small Pelagics Acoustic Survey (WESPAS) – 2 legs (June and July)
• Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey – 2 legs (October)
• International Groundfish Survey (IGFS) – 4 legs (October to December)
• INFOMAR Seabed Mapping Surveys – 5 legs (April to October)

The Institute was set up under the 1991 Marine Institute Act with the following general functions: “to undertake, to co-ordinate, to promote and to assist in marine research and development and to provide such services related to marine research and development, that in the opinion of the Institute will promote economic development and create employment and protect the environment. ” – Marine Institute Act, 1991.
SMART
The Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) builds capacity in offshore research, monitoring and resource management by providing structured research vessel access to students, researchers and marine oriented professionals. Key academic and research partners within the alliance include Atlantic Technological University(ATU), INFOMAR, University of Galway, University College Cork (UCC), and the Marine Institute. SMART is based in ATU at the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC).
