A Marine Science and Technology Partnership Programme for the island of Ireland

2024 Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey (CSHAS)

This survey continues a time series used to track the biomass and abundance of herring in the Celtic Sea and informs stock assessments by ICES expert groups. Mr Ciaran O’Donnell will lead an experienced team of biologists from the Marine Institute on survey transects deploying a pelagic trawl to ground truth echo traces of herring and other pelagic species.

The survey will take place from the 8th to 28th of October.

The Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey (CSHAS) is an excellent opportunity for graduates and postgraduate students to develop field skills and careers in fisheries acoustics, fisheries biometric and plankton sampling. Data collection also extends to marine mammals and seabirds.
