Join Irish Groundfish Survey 2025

The Irish Groundfish Survey (IGFS) is part of an internationally coordinated survey that takes place every year in November and December in the Atlantic shelf waters of Ireland. The main objectives of this survey are to gather essential information on commercially exploited fish stocks and specifically to estimate the numbers of young fish for monitoring of spawning success. IGFS data is vital for stock assessments, as it provides information not available from commercial landings.

Sampling Protocols

The IGFS sampling protocols focus on collecting biometric data for both commercial and non-commercial fish species, as well as benthic invertebrates. This data is gathered using demersal trawls at randomly chosen stations in Ireland’s southern, western, and northern waters. Participants will have the opportunity to develop practical and organizational skills across various aspects of biological sampling, including:

  • Data collection and recording
  • Biological screening and preservation
  • Survey planning and operations
