The Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is located across five campuses in the west of Ireland. ATU conducts marine research at the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre on its Galway campus. The Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training (SMART) is housed within the centre, along with up to 100 research fellows, postdoctoral researchers, and postgraduate students.

ATU is a core partner in the pan-European ERASMUS programme MARES that has secured over €5 million in funding for collaborative postgraduate research on marine ecosystem health and conservation. ATU offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes Freshwater and Marine Biology, Marine Ecology and Marine Conservation and Resource Biology.
