The Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey (CSHAS) continues a critical time series aimed at tracking the biomass and abundance of herring in the Celtic Sea, providing essential data for stock assessments by ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) expert groups. Led by Mr. Ciaran O’Donnell and an experienced team of biologists from the Marine Institute, the survey will employ a pelagic trawl to validate echo traces of herring and other pelagic species.
This year’s survey will take place over two legs in October, offering participants hands-on experience with the latest acoustic survey techniques and technologies.
Survey Highlights
The CSHAS provides an invaluable opportunity for graduates and postgraduate students interested in fisheries science, specifically in:
- Fisheries acoustics
- Fisheries biometric sampling
- Plankton sampling
Participants will also gain exposure to broader ecosystem data collection, including marine mammal and seabird observations.
Acoustic Surveys Background
The Celtic Sea Herring Acoustic Survey is part of a larger framework of acoustic surveys conducted by the Marine Institute, contributing to the sustainable management of marine resources. Survey Schedule
The 2025 survey will be conducted over two legs:
- CSHAS Leg 1: Early to mid October
- CSHAS Leg 2: Mid to end October
