Join Mackerel and Horse Mackerel Egg Survey 2025

The Mackerel and Horse Mackerel Egg Survey is an international survey conducted every three years during the spring and early summer. It covers the seas from the west of Spain, France, Ireland, and the UK, extending as far north as the Faroe Islands. The primary objectives of this survey are to  estimate the Spawning Stock Biomass (the total weight of all sexually mature fish) of the North-east Atlantic mackerel and horse mackerel stocks.

Sampling Protocols

Sampling protocols focus on collecting eggs and larvae using plankton nets at multiple stations across Ireland’s southern, western, and northern waters. Participants will have the opportunity to develop practical and organizational skills across various aspects of biological sampling, including:

  • Data collection and recording
  • Biological screening and preservation
  • Survey planning and operations
